TWENTY

USING THE GATES

When Nuke arrived at the observation dome, the others were already present. He noticed several packages with them. “What’s all this?” he asked.

Y’din reached down and handed one to him. “Supplies, clothes, and a few things I thought you might need.”

Nuke noticed the supplies were wrapped in a waterproof type material. Although a little weighty, Nuke reasoned he should be fine with the package once in the water. Just before they jumped in, however, Y’din took Nuke’s package. Nuke looked surprised.

Y’din shrugged. “It doesn’t matter if I get to the surface slower.”

Nuke nodded but didn’t say anything. He was grateful. His lungs always felt like they weren’t going to hold out until he reached the surface, and he always sucked in air as soon as his head cleared the water’s surface.

Today ended up being no different. Once they got to where each could wade toward shore, Nuke took his supplies pack from Y’din.

Y’din threw his over his shoulder. “Nuke, you go prep your jet, and start it, and we’ll meet you in the air above the mountain. You can then lead us to your gates.”

Nuke nodded and trudged through the sand to his jet, still where he had left it. As he approached, he stopped. Something didn’t feel right. He noticed several sets of footprints. He and his friends were not alone.

He cautiously walked to his jet, keeping an eye out toward the brush, not too far from the plane. Everything looked normal. No one could have gotten into his jet without his permission, so he wasn’t too worried on that account. Yet he wasn’t sure if an intruder could have sabotaged his jet some other way. After loading his supplies in the cockpit, he retrieved his stun gun and inspected the rest of the plane, going over every square inch. Everything looked fine, undisturbed.

Behind the jet, in the sand, tracks went toward the jungle. Since whoever this was couldn’t get in his jet, he wondered if they were now heading to find his friends and prevent them from getting to the jets inside the mountain. He cautiously followed the footprints and then headed toward where he knew his friends were headed. He kept his eyes and ears open for the slightest hint of movement. With no animals in this jungle, any movement would most likely be another person.

Nuke tried to travel as quickly, but as quietly, as possible. After half an hour, he still had seen no one and heard nothing. As he traveled farther inland, he suddenly heard some type of explosion—and then a yell. Nuke picked up his pace.

Once he arrived where his friends were, he found each struggling in a physical duel with another Myeemian.

Nuked aimed his stun weapon and was ready to fire at a large Myeemian fighting Y’din when a limb smashed across his wrist and dislodged his gun. His wrist really smarted, but Nuke didn’t have time to focus on his pain. He turned just in time to take a punch to his jaw, causing him to bite his lip.
